Saint Valentine's Day

Post by Varun on Sat 26 Jan 2008 - 2:34

Saint Valentine's Day will be celebrated all around the globe in less than 3 weeks' time. Should this really be celebrated? Does it hold any importance or is it a mere commercial occurence?

i think that it does have some importance. it acts like a reminder and n make people think back on how they met or fell in love. it also help couple to get out of their routine for a bit. maybe it also help to strengthen relationships as some couples really look forward to it (mo pa p koz ban zenfan lekol la!!). bt as always it has been too much commercialised. well i reckon lor la li depen dimoune. si n dimoun envi aster bague diamond, la chaine, chocolat, peluche ek si pa ki enkor b then c so choix. for more romantic people a rose might say everything or a kiss or better, just spending the day together.

From what I have learnt so far, there are varying opinions as to the origin of Saint Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from Saint Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that Saint Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine".

Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour Saint Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.

Dapre ceki moi mo penC c'est que St Valentin n'est pa un jour ke zis bann amoureux celebrer. As far as you love and care someone, you may celebrate it. For instance, you may celebrate it with a friend or your siblings just as I do. It's true to say that love cannot be celebrated only on St Valentine's day but I guess that some people don't really have time to say a small 'I love you' to their near and dear ones each and every day. Therefore, it's a special occasion to shower love, affection and care on the person you love. It may be in terms of words or even gifts, whatever means you choose to share your feelings, the intention is the only thing that matters. It depends on different kinds of persons with several mindsets, however. If you sincerely love a person, not only St Valentine should be a day to show the gratitude you have for him/her, every day should be a Valentine's day, part of the routine till the end of a lifetime...
