English Premier League - 2007/08

Post by Varun on Fri 4 Jan 2008 - 15:39

Here we are in the second half of the English Premier League and Arsenal is leading the table with an advantage of 2 points over Manchester United. Chelsea are in 3rd place whereas Manchester City find themselves in the last Champions League qualification spot. Liverpool are only 5th but they do have a game in hand.

So guys, what are your views for this season and who do you think will be crowned champions?

Re: FA Premier League - Season 2007/08

Post by Shanu on Fri 4 Jan 2008 - 21:11

Now, so far in this season it looked like Manchester United were becoming a clone of Liverpool with 1-0 wins but you can't go against nature. The DNA of Manchester United is to attack and score goals and they made it through in the end. It was just a bit of teething problems with the players needing to settle into the new season and the new arrivals requiring some adjustments.

Moving into the most important part of the season it's all looking pretty good now. Tevez and Rooney are working really well together, the sheer quality of both players meant they were always going to find a way to get around their similarities denying the early critics of the campaign.

Nani and Anderson look like they've been here for a year or two rather than three months. Nani has a cracking shot which has come as a nice surprise and it's something we haven't seen enough of at United, the long range shot specialist. The crafty wee winger seems to be getting more confident with every game. I had doubts about Anderson at first. He looked very lightweight and horrible thoughts of "Kleberson II" sprung to my mind. Yet, a few months of settling in and he looks good quality. Losing Paul Scholes would normally be a stinker but I reckon Anderson can fill in nicely.

As for our main opponent, Arsenal, it's hard not to have a grudging respect for them... They've got a young team reminiscent of our 1995 team but they seem a bit less annoying without the hateful likes of Vieira, Keown, Pires, Ljungberg, Henry and Cole plus with the old Highbury gone it almost feels like a different club altogether. Even Wenger himself has become a bit less of a wind-up merchant in recent years though this is likely because Arsenal have won dicks in the last three seasons and ultimately he's had to shut his Gallic gob.

Okay, he has assembled a low key bunch of kids and clever signings who get on with playing good football but still, Manchester United have the greater options in all positions. In the end it will probably come down to psychological factors and the Gunners' arses might not feel they are ready to be champions deep down. We've shown great consistency by winning so many games in a row and even when we were not playing well at the start we still won matches, which is always a sign of title winning material. I'm not sure Arsenal will be able to play poorly and still win as they still lack the steel that runs through Fergie's team.

Wenger and Fergie have both been blessed by having clubs that were patient and willing to trust in their proven records. A few years ago Fergie was seen as a dithering old geezer who most United fans would have gladly seen bundled off to the nearest retirement home. Many feared he'd lost the plot. You would have found very few who he ever could make United great again but the cunning old lad had a plan, it would take a few years but he was secretly building another glorious team which is now reaching a magnificent peak. Same with Wenger, his team was an utter mess the last few seasons but now with a focus on youth, the Gunners are spurting goals from everywhere and seriously hunting trophies again.

If ever there was a lesson for clubs like Spurs, Newcastle, Manchester City and even Chelsea, which I feel is no more the same without Jose Mourinho, it's that long term success comes from long term stability.

Looking at the mersey side I feel a bit confused because at first Rafael Benitez was seen as the best man for the Cops but these days even his words aren't being allowed to go public courtesy of George Gillett and Tom Hicks. It now remains to be seen what and what will again be courtesy of George Gillette & Co.

My dear Deesha, have you read the article which I origanlly wrote and Shanu posted above? Go through them and then ponder well on what you just said. Are they any relevant?

We are talking about the FA Premier League here, not about your attraction for Lampard or whatsoever. What I can propose you is that you go in the Girls' Corner in The Lounge category and express all your passion about Lampard & Co. there. geek

Gary Neville returns in right back, Ferdinand stands good, Brown/Silvestre will partner the latter and Evra should retain his place in left back as usual. O'Shea, Pique, Simpson and Evans are there if needed and Vidic should be available before the end of this month. So, where's the problem? scratch

www.ManUtd.com wrote:Mikael Silvestre is one of the most experienced members of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad. In fact, at the end of the 2006/07 season, only four members of the current side had played for United more times.

This impressive record owes much to Mikael’s ability to play in two different positions: centre-back and left-back. As such, he’s survived the threat posed by new acquisitions and been invaluable to the manager when others have been suspended or injured. In the latter stages of 2005/06, he was the one patrolling Gabriel Heinze’s patch on the left flank while new-boy Nemanja Vidic partnered central lynchpin Rio Ferdinand.

The return to left-back, where he’d once been resident, enabled Silvestre to show off some of his attacking skills, including a pinpoint cross for Wayne Rooney’s goal against Arsenal in April 2006. He later described that 2-0 win for United as the best match of his career.

Wohooooooooooooooo.

Manchester United won against Arsenal @ Old Traffold by 2 goals to one. One from the best winger namely Christiano Ronaldo (penalty) and one from Owen Hargreaves (free kick). The free kick was simply unstoppable. Jens Lehmann saw the ball touching the net without any reaction. It was simply tremendous! cheers

Manchester has 3 match away and 1 home which is against West Ham. Don't forget that Manchester United has to play against Chelsea in those 3 away matches! pale

May be he is eyeing to break the record of Dennis Viollet but I personally think this won't be achieved. Viollet scored 46 goals in all competitions for Manchester United in 1959/60 season including 32 goals in 36 league matches.
