Re: Social Networking

Post by Sneha on Mon 21 Dec 2009 - 21:56

Social networking has pros and cons as many other subjects do, but I believe mostly in its disadvantages.

Firstly, it's an open way to waste time. There's nothing to be gained except from seeking futile attention. Secondly, being in contact with unknown people, your safety and privacy is being put at stake.

Alexa rates Facebook, MySpace and hi5 in the top 50 most visited websites worldwide but my personal opinion is that it is in the top 5 things to do if you want to your waste time.

That's right Sneha.
Though am only in hi5, i do notice that most people who come there are there either only to play or waste time by trying to look for girls or boys to flirt.

One doesn't really communicate with the strangers, added as their friends. They do it for show off.
One would also notice that only a few among the friends added, are friends in real life.

That's right. Often, harassment of any kind may also occur disturbing people's personal and business life.

Re: Social Networking

Post by Sneha on Tue 22 Dec 2009 - 13:58

Not me, but a friend of mine, yeah. She put her E-mail address in public when she was on hi5. All kind of people started adding her as a friend but then she knew that not all of them had good intentions. One of them even figured out her telephone number and where she lived. Since her parents were severe with her, she was not allowed to talk to boys so she was scared to inform her parents about that problem. The boy took advantage of this and threatened that if she won't take his call, he'll phone at her house and tell her parents that she slept with him. This was becoming quite complicated so my friend decided to tell her parents who talked to the boy and his family. After that, I didn't hear much about what happened as my friend changed college. But, I think the boy stopped harassing her later. Quite disturbing, anyway...

Yeah that's true.
That's another disadvantage of social networking, if one shares something concerning one's private life, then others try to make the most of the situation.

Sneha, your friend asked for that trouble and that's it.

That said, people should ask themselves whether they really need to jump on the social networking bandwagon or not because take my case for example; some years ago, I was on hi5 and everyday I used to log in my account to do what? Changing my page's layout, accepting (unknown) friend requests, accepting fives, accepting messages saying I'm sexy and I don't know what more.

However, there were lots of computer enthusiasts like me on that network but never once I got the chance to meet one. Weird isn't it? No, it isn't because people are there only to seek futile attention with their semi-nude pictures and flirtings.

Yes, she invited trouble in her own life, I agree.

This goes same for me... I thought I was being cool or 'in'. However, with time I realised I was only being childish while doing that because I gained nothing positive and constructive to publish my photos, searching old as well as new friends, wasting time in searching for and changing layouts, etc. Hours were spent in that thing.

Also, I got carried by the peer group I was with who was always talking about hi5. When I think of those times, 'bullshit' comes out of my mouth and I wish I could have engaged myself in a better occupation. Neutral

At times, I invite people I know to register themselves in the forum and the most common answer I get is:
"You know, I don't have too much of free time these days..."

As a gentleman, I simply tell them it's okay but do drop in if ever you feel like or find yourselves free.

However, guess what do they ask me just after?

"Are you on Facebook?"

And, do you know what I feel like replying to them? Watch the video below...

My sister once said that the games on Facebook are good and entertaining, but this idea doesn't tempt me because I have better ways of entertaining myself with PC games.

ben bann incidents ki arriver lor facebook, like recently, 1 fille ine creer 1 activity, et ine invite so bann friends pu so birthday party but forgot to click on an option that allows only her frens to see. so instead everybody was able to see her invitation, thus she was scared to see how many replies she had got, and her mother had to apologise on her behalf. The police was present around her house just to see that no facebook pranksters would show up even if the invitation was canceled!!!

Social networking, Facebook is really very addictive with its application. When I was having a facebook account, I remember how I was just wasting time. But if someone knows how to manage..thats fine
Social networking, I guess certain information should not be displayed concerning the person so as to avoid trouble. See we can't blame hi5, facebook, netlog or whatever. Its there. Its up to us to decide if we want to go for it or not.

Not at all, Vishaan.

Anyway, I want to share something with all of you... This afternoon, I was talking to an old friend and I asked her to come back and participate in the forum. She told me she doesn't like to post her comments anymore, she prefers to refrain herself from such things. However, when I asked her what's up, she gave me a one-word answer and that was Facebook.

Last night she told me the same thing, this morning also I got the same answer and this afternoon too.
