Not all websites hosting BitTorrent trackers haven't been forced to stop their services but that's likely going to happen in the coming months. However, there still exist lots of other P2P alternatives. Wink

One P2P alternative program can be an IRC client.

For those who don't know, IRC exists since 1988. That's a long way back compared to the apparition of BitTorrent.

Re: BitTorrent

Post by Sneha on Sun 15 Nov 2009 - 18:02

Varun is right, Rapidshare isn't a P2P alternative.

In the past, I used Bearshare which is a P2P software. In the beginning, everything went well. The speed for downloading was rather quick, I would easily get anything I searched for. But with time, I realised that no one was ready to share or seed which means that even a song would take at least a month to download. On top of that, neither I could get good quality songs nor I understood the exact meaning of what Bearshare is for because nothing was clear.

Then, Varun proposed to use BitTorrent. I saw no other better P2P program than this. It was free like Bearshare but I had a better understanding on peers and seeds. I understood that peers are not only there to consume, but also to supply unlike the traditional client-server model. But what comes after BitTorrent? Not Bearshare atleast... Mad

Shanu, what do you do if you have to download a 5 GB file from RapidShare and the power goes out after having downloaded 4.9 GB of the file or if the RapidShare moderators simply remove the file? Razz

There are lots of hosting websites similar to RapidShare but all of them have much more disadvantages compared to P2P and I would like someone to reply my last question before proceeding with this topic...

iMesh and Ares Lite can't be good alternatives to BitTorrent as you don't have trusted uploaders or peers' comments from a portal to judge what you're downloading.

Re: BitTorrent

Post by simpleguy on Wed 9 Dec 2009 - 3:10

Allow me to add to the thread.

BitTorrent stands for the name of the peer to peer filesharing protocol but BitTorrent is also the name of the original program that supported peer to peer transfers using the BitTorrent protocol.

Traditionally, BitTorrent required the use of a Tracker. Think of a tracker as a coordinator that BitTorrent users query to get additional information on a .torrent file (Find out who is seeding, who is leeching etc.)

I assume the original poster is referring to the uncertain future of the largest BitTorrent tracker, The Pirate Bay and the recent drastic change to Mininova, another large BitTorrent tracker. Also, the BitTorrent protocol has evolved and can now work without "Trackers".

Of course, there are other complex mechanisms behind BitTorrent but I am in no mood to re-type whats existent on the web already. Wikipedia has good information on BitTorrent.

Rest assured, BitTorrent is not dead. You don't kill a protocol. There are dozens of alternatives out there. A simple google search on "mininova alternatives" will yield dozens of other sites.

@Varun

Rapidshare-hosted files are of a 200 MB maximum filesize. So for your 5 GB file, you will be downloading about 25 files of that 200 MB size. Should the power die, you will be re-downloading a maximum amount of 200 MB that might have been corrupted.

Now if you are downloading and reached the 24th file and rapidshare decides to pull the plug on the files, you're out of luck

Re: BitTorrent

Post by Varun on Tue 9 Nov 2010 - 23:36

To my knowledge uTorrent is the most recommended BitTorrent (protocol) client. As for BitTorrent (software), it is now a rebranded uTorrent client. So, the debate on which is better between BitTorrent (software) and uTorrent can't really exist these days.

Download speed will depend on your client and internet (including modem) settings. Just to give you an idea, I have a 2 Mbit internet connection and I download up to 18 GB of data per day with uTorrent. Now, if that isn't fast...

To my knowledge, Megaupload uses the same protocol as Rapidshare and that's something which we have already discussed above. So, I don't think we can call it a P2P alternative.

That said, The Pirate Bay is still showing its resilience despite the numerous lawsuits and sabotage actions.

Re: BitTorrent

Post by Varun on Sun 21 Nov 2010 - 14:11

In the past, I needed to forward a port manually on my modem router else uTorrent wouldn't download at all. However, I have noticed that my internet service provider has upgraded the firmware of my internet device and I don't need to forward a port manually to be able to download now.

So, I would advise you to leave the connection and bandwidth preferences on defaults while selecting "Enabled" for Outgoing Protocol Encryption and enabling "Allow incoming legacy connections" for the BitTorrent parameters.

Does the status bar of your uTorrent window now show a tick in a green circle, Kavi?

By the way, this topic has been used more in a question and answer style. So, I suggest we move it in Help Center and change the title to simply BitTorrent. Do you all agree?
